Food that has a longer shelf life, is optimally protected during transport and remains aromatically fresh is the goal of packaging solutions made of barrier films. In this way they make a significant contribution to ensuring that food does not have to be disposed of prematurely and are therefore an important element in the issue of sustainability. “With our packaging solutions, we aim to prevent the spoilage of food, which accounts for many tons every year”, says Hans Bresele, Managing Director of ALLVAC. The Allgäu-based family business has specialised in the manufacture and sale of barrier films. The company will be presenting its latest products at the Interpack in Düsseldorf from 7 to 13 May (Hall 5, Stand 5B01).
Superior packaging solutions
Films from ALLVAC are mostly in demand as thermoformed food packaging. The packaging of meat and sausage products plays the leading role. The ingress of moisture, oxygen and other external influences can be prevented, if fresh meat, sausage or ham is packaged in barrier films. Since butcheries can consistently dispense with preserving agents in this packaging solution, they can confidently meet the customer’s demand for authentic food. Meat still retains its fresh colour, remains tender and full of flavour.
New generation of barrier films
In addition to the classics, new barrier films that are made from renewable raw materials or can do without polyamide will be on show. The new films are part of the lived sustainability to which ALLVAC attaches greatest importance. Highly motivated, the specialist for barrier films invests a lot of innovative power in future-oriented packaging solutions. Films with EVOH barrier as an alternative to PA will also be presented to visitors to the fair.
EVOH stands for ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and is an essential barrier layer for films without polyamide that protects food from oxygen. Advantage: These composite films are considered recyclable. Disadvantage: The films require a higher film thickness and do not achieve the same cycle rate as films containing polyamide. Barrier films, even if the polyamide content is produced from renewable materials, are not recyclable.
Hope for chemical recycling
“Our industry has great expectations for the chemical recycling of plastic waste”, admits the Managing Director of ALLVAC. This process enables the recycling of PA/PE barrier film and thus new possibilities for high-quality recycling of plastics. The procedure is currently only practiced in experimental stages. He is curious to see how the signals from the industry through the concentrated appearance at Interpack will affect the further development of this important solution approach. The production of thermoforming barrier films based on polyethylene and polyamide is the core competence of ALLVAC. These composite films are used in particular for the packaging of perishable foods.
